On a Serious Note: Shooting at LA Fitness has me shaken

As I’m watching the pieces of this horror story being patched together on CNN, I am in utter disbelief.

The shooting at LA Fitness happened in Collier Township, a town just a short drive from downtown Pittsburgh.

I was first alerted to the news via my friend Christina’s facebook status. She is a member at LA Fitness, and by some twist of fate decided to not go tonight. Thank God she is alright. Unfortunately, many others are not.

Then the twitter updates started coming in. And the text messages.  And more facebook status updates.

According to KDKA at least five people are dead in addition to the gunman and more injured. It’s also being speculated that this was the result of the gunman being dumped/rejected by a woman in the class by local news stations.

I’m utterly stunned and shaken by this news. Collier township is just mere minutes away from where I grew up. Plenty of my friends live in the area. My wedding reception is being held just a mile or so down the road. This isn’t an inner-city neighborhood. It’s not even a “bad” neighborhood.

What troubles me most is I just got done telling my coworker today how leaving Chicago to move home seemed more appealing every day, based on the rising crime rates in the city. But the harsh reality is senseless crime is everywhere. There’s really no escaping it. Thinking you’re immune to crime because you live in the “right” neighborhood is just naïve.

I’m not trying to push religion or beliefs on anyone here, but please keep the victims’ families in your thoughts and prayers. Especially my friend’s cousin, who was injured in the shooting. I know I will be.

This is just so horrible. It really maddens/saddens me. It is so frustrating that so many people either, do not know, or are not taught, how to cope. Even with all these beatings going on near me lately, it continues to make me wonder where are we safe? So sad. I’ll be keeping the victims and their families in my thoughts.

I grew up very close to Bridgeville too and have been to that shopping center more times than I can count. So scary and way too close to home. Thankfully, no one I knew was hurt even though I have lots of friends that go to that gym. Joining was on my to-do list when I moved back later this month. Keeping everyone in my prayers.

That’s so awful, and of course they’re kept in thoughts and prayers. You’re right – this kind of thing can happen anywhere. My quiet little suburb and the surrounding ones were completely rocked with senseless violence like this a few years ago. Completely senseless, utterly sad, and the best I can offer is that you and all who are touched by this find peace soon.

[...] and a quick update on my friend’s cousin from my post yesterday: she was shot in the back but her injuries were minor enough for her to be released from the [...]

Me in a nutshell

I'm just a 20-something girl who can't decide where I want to live. I moved from Pittsburgh to Chicago and back in a 2 year span. I'm a fianceé, a lover of celebrity gossip, a wannabe baking diva, a kitty mama, a VW driver, and a die hard Penguins fan.
